You can set the camera so that the focusing is performed when the =
button is pressed.

Select [Enable AF] in [13. AF
Button Function] in the
[A Custom Setting 2] menu.

Press the = button.
Auto focusing is performed.

Press the shutter release button.
The picture is taken.
Using the = Button to Focus on the Subject
Enable AF
Auto focusing is performed by using the = button or the
shutter release button. (default setting)
Cancel AF
\ appears in the viewfinder while the = button is
pressed. Autofocus does not activate when the shutter
release button is pressed. (Take your finger off the =
button to return to normal autofocus mode.)
l (Single mode)
When the subject is focused by pressing
the = button, the focus lock is activated
while the button is pressed.
k (Continuous mode)
The subject is kept in focus when the =
button is pressed.
