Laptop--To--EMM Connections
T roubleshooting communication problems must begin with verifying the proper connections are made between
the EMM and laptop. Additional troubleshooting techniques are provided at the end of the chapter.
Understanding the EMM communication cable.
The EMM communication cable located inside the watercraft performs two important tasks. First, the cable trans-
fers and receives data from a laptop when connected. Second, when not connected to a laptop, the cable com-
pletes the EMM power--in circuit located on PIN 7.
NOTE: If the EMM power--in circuit is not complete, the EMM will not power up when the start/stop button is
pressed and engine will never start.
When troubleshooting, verify the SINGLE W/R PIN of the connector has continuity between the pin and every
W/R in the engine harness. Verify that PIn 7 has continuity between the comm. plug and PIN 7 located in the
40--PIN EMM connector.
NOTE: For additional continuity checks, see back of chapter.
Service Power Connector
The service power connector allows the user to “power--up” the EMM when the engine is not running. The service
power connector connects to the end of the 8--PIN power harness that is normally installed in the EMM.
When the connector is installed, it transfers, or “jumps” battery voltage from the RED/PUR circuit to the W/R Ficht
power circuit. Doing this turns on the EMM and allows the user to run the diagnostic software without having to
run the watercraft.
Important facts to remember:
S Service Power connector must be installed to run diagnostic software without the engine running.
S To run the diagnostic software with the engine running, the 8--PIN power harness must be
installed into the EMM.
S The Service Power Connector transfers power from the RED/PUR battery circuit to the W/R Ficht
power circuit.
S To check 8--PIN power harness, insert lanyard into start/stop switch. Use a multimeter to verify
that there is battery voltage on both RED/PUR pins and engine ground. V erify that there is conti-
nuity between both W/R pins and every other W/R pin in the engine electrical harness.
S When the Service Power Connector is installed, every W/R circuit in the engine electrical harness
should be supplied with battery voltage.
