standalone A computer used on its own rather than linked
into a network.
stop bit A serial communications parameter used to
make sure that transmitting and receiving
equipment are in step with one another.
systemboard The main printed circuit board inside a computer
on which the processor and RAM are attached.
text editor A program which allows you to create and edit
batch files and other text files.
utility A program used by the operating system to
organise and control files, disks and devices.
VGA A video graphics adapter and standard providing
a selection of screen modes.
Windows 3.11 A set of programs which extends the MS-DOS
operating system. It provides a graphical user
interface (GUI) based on windows, icons, menus
and the use of a mouse.

management.
word length Serial communications parameter defining the
length of one character of information to be
transmitted or received.
write protect The mechanism provided on a floppy disk to
prevent the information on it from being
changed.
ZIF Zero Insertion Force. A type of socket that uses a
lever to lock and release the component in the
socket.
