Modeling Envelope
The actual volume of space inside FDM hardware in which physical mod-
els can be created.
Modeling Envelope Temperature Control
This is the Watlow controller labelled “Envelope.” It controls the temperature of the
envelope in degrees Celsius.
Modeling Material
A plastic or wax compound that is liquefied and extruded through the modeling tip
to create a part.
Ooze
Material that extrudes from the FDM tip when it is not in use.
Operating System
A software system native to computers that supports other software and hard-
ware. Examples include Unix and Windows.
Origin
The point in the modeling envelope where the X, Y, and Z coordinates all
equal zero. This point is definable by the user by positioning the tip
before releasing the initial pause on a model. It usually is not the same
as the home position.
Pause Button
When this button is flashing, caused by an out-of-material condition or if
the torque limit is reached, it finishes building the current road and
waits for further instructions. It is located on the left side of the X-Y-Z
Controller panel.
%Flow Button
This allows the user to override the flow rate. It is located on the key-
pad directly to the left of the words “%Flow.”
Perimeter Curve
The toolpath that follows the inside and outside cruve on every Z-level.
P400-ABS
This tough plastic is an acrylonitrile-butadyne-styrene based material
designed to produce sturdy prototypes useful for concept models and
for examination of an object’s fit, form, and some function.
