Tools for Finishing Models
Finishing a model to conform to the design specifications requires a variety of
tools. Each model design has unique geometry which determines the shape of
the picks, knives, and sanding blocks best suited to that model.
Tools for P400-ABS Plastic (ABS)
Stratasys recommends the following tools for finishing parts made from ABS:
l A needle-nose pliers
l A good electric detail sander (e.g. Dremil Sander)
l A large variety of metal files
l A variety of foam sanding blocks
l 120 grit sandpaper
l 320 grit sandpaper
l A variety of dental picks
l A hot knife for filling gaps with raw material
l Gap-filling super-glue
l A sandable gap-filling primer
l Plastic welding glue such as ProWeld ABS Glue
l A good sealing compound such as epoxy
l An Auto body repair putty such as Bondo
l Mineral spirits for removing paint from ABS parts
l Isopropyl alcohol for cleaning parts
The model finishing area must be well ventilated, and should have a
good dust collector installed.
The operator should always wear safety glasses and a dust mask when
removing supports or sanding parts.
It is extremely important to keep the sanders and files clean.
