4 CARRYING OUT TRANSACTIONS
4.1 Overview of transaction types
Your payment terminal supports several different transaction types. However, not all transaction types
are supported by all payment cards. The acquirer and the type of payment card determine which types of
transactions you can carry out.
Important: Contact your acquirer if you are unable to carry out a transaction with a particular type of
payment card.
The table below lists the different types of transactions you can carry out, and describes the situations in
which they occur.
Overview of transaction types
Sale The card holder pays using a payment card.
Cancellation Cancellation of a previous transaction.
Cash advance The card holder withdraws cash at a point-of-sale terminal.
Reservation Reservation of a specific amount of money for a specific period of time.
Sale after reservation Complete a sale following an earlier reservation.
Refund Refunding money to a card holder when a product is returned.
Sale referral A transaction in which you enter an authorisation code that you have
obtained by telephone.
Cash advance after referral The card holder withdraws cash at a point-of-sale terminal. During this
transaction, an authorisation code must be entered which has been
obtained by telephone.
Card check Contacting the card issuer to check if the payment card is still valid.
Extra reservation Increase a previously reserved amount.
