5.5.3 Fuel pump
The two fuel pumps supply the fuel rail with fuel at high pressure.

5.5.3.1 Function
The gear wheel of the supply unit drives the pinion (005, Figure 5-29) and thus the camshaft of
the fuel pump. The four plungers in the fuel pump compress the fuel. The flow control valve
(003) controls the flow related to the signal of the engine control system. This controls the
pressure to the fuel rail.
5.5.3.2 Lubrication
The oil filter in the lubricating oil inlet pipe prevents contamination of the fuel pump with large
particles. The oil then flows through the lubricating oil inlet (004) into the bottom housing and
thus lubricates the fuel pump. The lubricating oil then flows back to the housing of the supply
unit.
