If the stir vibration amplitude is not correct, press > to increase
the stir amplitude and the “xx” value or press < to decrease
the stir amplitude and the “xx” value. Continue to increase or
decrease the “xx” value as necessary, until the stir vibration
blur at the very tip of the stir/freeze wire is between 1/8 and
1/4 or between 3 and 6 mm.
As this adjustment is completed, you may wish to hold a sample
tube containing a sample of either an NaCl standard or H
2
O up
in position on the probe and stir/freeze wire to make sure that
the stir vibration is not so great as to produce froth or bubbles.
If froth or bubbles are produced, decrease the stir amplitude
setting 5 digits lower than that at which bubbles just begin to
appear.
p. When the stir amplitude is correct, you may wish to record
the stir-amplitude “xx” value in the service log at the end of
Chapter 5 for reference. Press ENTER to store the new setting.
The display will change to “Set Stir Amplitude”.
q. At “Set Stir Amplitude”, press STOP to exit the SETUP pro-
gram (or > or < to step to another SETUP item).
r. When STOP is pressed, the display will change to “Press
Start to Continue”, “Cryoscope Ready” or “Reset
Probe Configuration”.
s. After replacing the sample probe, the bin number must be
checked and reset, as necessary, as described in item 7 and
the instrument must be recalibrated, as described in Chapter 4.
Even if the probe has not been replaced, the calibration should
be checked and reset, as necessary, as described in Chapter 4,
after making any probe and/or stir/freeze wire adjustment.
7. Sample-Probe Bin Setting
a. Make sure the Supervisor/operator keyswitch is in the
