Overview

The AEMC Model 205 is a professional electrical measuring instrument designed for a wide range of electrical measurements.

Function Description:

The Model 205 combines multiple functions, including:

  • Current measurement (AC, DC, AC+DC)
  • Measurement of InRush current / overcurrent (True InRush®)
  • Voltage measurement (AC, DC, AC+DC)
  • Frequency measurement (Hz)

AC+DC Intensity:

  • Accuracy (zero corrected): ±(1% R + 10cts) for 0.15-59.99A, ±(1% R + 3cts) for 60.0-900A.

  • Note: Displays "+OL" above +1800A and "-OL" below -1800A in REL mode (DC). Displays "+OL" above 1500A in PEAK mode (AC/AC+DC). Bandwidth in AC = 3kHz.

True InRush® Measurement:

  • Ranges: 6 to 600AAC, 6 to 900ADC.
  • Accuracy: ±(5% R + 5cts).
  • Resolution: 1A.
  • Note: Triggering threshold is 10A if initial current is zero.

Continuity Measurement:

  • Range: 0.0 to 599.9Ω.
  • Open-circuit Voltage: ≤ 3.6V.
  • Measurement Current: 550μA.
  • Accuracy: ±(1% R + 5cts).
  • Buzzer Triggering Threshold: Adjustable from 1 to 599Ω (40Ω default).

Indication of Phase Order:

  • Frequency Range: 47 to 400Hz.
  • Acceptable Voltage Range: 50 to 1000V.
  • Acquisition Duration Period: ≤500ms.
  • Validity Duration Period: Approx. 10s at 50Hz, 2s at 400Hz.
  • Acceptable Phase Unbalance: ±10.
  • Acceptable Amplitude Unbalance: 20%.
  • Acceptable Level of Harmonics in Voltage: 10%.

Usage Features:

  • Rotary Switch: Six positions for selecting measurement functions (OFF, V, Ω, A, W, 1-2-3Φ).
  • Function Buttons:
    • HOLD: Stores the last value on the display, performs DC zero correction, lead resistance compensation.
    • Yellow Button (Second Function): Selects AC/DC/AC+DC measurement types, configures default values, cycles through continuity/resistance/diode test, resets phase order indication, displays total 3-phase power.
    • Backlight Button: Enables/disables display backlighting (auto-disabled after 2 minutes).
    • MAX/MIN/PEAK Button: Activates detection of MAX, MIN, PEAK+ (maximum instantaneous peak), and PEAK- (minimum instantaneous peak) values. Disables Auto Power Off.
    • Hz Button: Performs frequency measurements, selects harmonic distortion measurements (THDf, THDr), displays powers (W, VA, var, PF). Not functional in DC mode.
    • AREL Button: Stores a reference value, displays differential and relative values. Not functional in phase rotation mode.
  • Terminals: COM (black) and + (red) input terminals for voltage, resistance, continuity, and diode measurements.
  • Jaws: Opened by a trigger on the meter body for current measurements. Arrow on jaws indicates presumed direction of current flow. Optimal results when conductor is centered.
  • Configuration: Default parameters can be reset by holding the yellow button while turning the switch to A from OFF.
  • Auto Power Off: Enabled by default (10 minutes of inactivity). Can be disabled for certain modes (e.g., MAX/MIN/PEAK).
  • InRush Measurement: Initiated by a long press of the MAX/MIN/PEAK button in current mode. Measures starting or overcurrent.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: Indicated by a low battery symbol on the display. Requires unscrewing the battery compartment cover, replacing the 9V LF22 battery, and re-securing the cover. Test leads must be disconnected.
  • Cleaning: Disconnect all connections, set the switch to OFF. Use a soft cloth moistened with soapy water, rinse with a damp cloth, and dry thoroughly.
  • Calibration: Recommended at one-year intervals by the factory Service Center or as required by internal procedures. An NIST traceable certificate can be requested.
  • Repair: Requires obtaining a Customer Service Authorization Number (CSA#) from the Service Department before returning the instrument.
  • Safety Precautions: Emphasizes reading the manual, not using in explosive atmospheres, observing voltage/current limits, not using if damaged, checking insulation, using rated leads, not modifying the instrument, and performing configuration when disconnected from dangerous voltages.
