Mechelle
2.3 entRance apeRtuRe slit
The standard Mechelle is supplied with the SMA connector and brass tool (Figure 3, left). The maximum aperture height
recommended to avoid order crosstalk is 50 μm. The entrance aperture can be either, a direct bre input, a slit or a
pinhole. When a bre-optic input is used, the best arrangement for maximum throughput is to have the bre itself as the
aperture. In that case the bre diameter should not exceed 50 μm.
In some applications bre-optics cannot be used, particularly in the UV region, due to the lack of throughput, so a Slit
Disc must be used (Figure 3, right).

The most common slit size used is a rectangular 25 μm x 50 μm (W x H) slit. Other apertures such as a 50 μm x 50
μm, or
50 μm pinhole can also be used. However, these wider slits will provide a lower resolution than the 25μm x 50μm slit, but
yield a higher throughput. The maximum recommended slit width is 200 μm.
NOTE: If a 10 μm x 50 μm slit is used the resolution of the system will improve but throughput will be reduced.
The exchange procedure for the SMA and other adapters is shown in Section 6.3.
2.3.1 OptiOnal St & FC Fibre adapterS
Optional ST and FC bre adapters can also be used with the Mechelle spectrograph.
NOTE: After changing slit to bre, the unit must be recalibrated.
