Mechelle
4.4 WavelengtH calibRation using a MeRcuRy-aRgon spectRal laMp
The Mechelle Spectrograph and camera are pre-aligned and calibrated at the factory - it is however strongly
recommended to perform a calibration on rst operation of the system after reception and in the laboratory environment
of use.
The Mechelle must be re-calibrated if any of the following occur:
The ambient temperature changes more than ±5°C from calibrated temperature
The bre optic is changed
The Entrance Slit is changed to a bre, or vice versa
The camera is moved or re-aligned
The shutter housing is removed
To do this you should switch on a reference source (the procedure below uses a Mercury-Argon lamp with a wide spread
of spectral features from UV to NIR) and acquire a signal.
NOTE: If the Mechelle has a slit option, make sure that the Mercury lamp is set at 50 cm from slit and lling the
F# of the Mechelle.
Look at the image of 253.652 nm line in #0, which should appear near the middle of the detector (X ≈ 500, Y ≈ 300 for
Mechelle 5000) it should look similar to that shown below:
Figure 14: Data captured from an Hg Ar calibration source
If the Mechelle has a bre option, couple the other end of the bre to the lamp.
NOTE: At that stage ensure that the brightest features on the image are not saturated. If it is not the case, please
reduce the detector exposure time, gate pulse width or gain (in the case of iStar).
