6.2 General treatment information
WARNING
Smoke, vapor and tissue particles are produced as by-products of laser treatment.
These contaminants can be removed by the internal smoke evacuator to keep the
visual field clean for the operator and exhaust any air pollutants.
WARNING
If the laser is applied, the use of an ear protection is highly recommended for all
persons in the treatment room.
CAUTION
Laser fumes and/or plume may contain viable tissue particulates
CAUTION
Application of laser radiation to the skin can lead to damage to tissue structures
intentionally according to the indication or unintentionally.
The physician is responsible for the precise determination of the indication, the
treatment zone and the treatment parameters as well as for the correct positioning of
the handpiece.
Also, the temperature of the cooling probe for the handpiece must be checked by hand,
as well as the adjusted Fluence at the display, during the treatment .
CAUTION
Due to the side effects of the laser beam, inflammation and slight edemas may be
observed in the treated area during the treatment. Blisters with subsequent incrustation
and temporary pigment changes are rare. Persistent pigment changes, scars and
temporary urticarial changes are extremely rare if the device has been operated as
intended and the patient is co-operative.
The degree of these side effects varies from patient to patient; normally it is very low.
Therefore, a test treatment must be performed in any case on a small area as
described below to minimize the side effects and to optimize the effect of the treatment
simultaneously.
It is important to bear in mind that the side effects may be worse when treating larger
area than a smaller test area.
Patients also get a better impression of the treatment procedure and can decide for or against a
treatment more easily before giving their consent.
Tip
In a pre-operation discussion, the patient should be informed about all the risks that
may be caused by the laser treatment and pre- and post-operative care. Moreover, the
patient should get all information about the mechanism of laser treatment, alternative
procedures, the time required for the treatment, the prospects of successful treatment
and about behavior after the laser treatment.
You are advised to report this conversation and to make the patient sign a special
consent form for this briefing. It is also recommended that you take photographs before
and after the treatment.
