6.2.1.1 Typical Indications
Operating at a wavelength of 2.94 µm, which corresponds with the maximum absorption of water,
the MCL 31 Dermablate Er:YAG laser is perfectly suited for precise superficial skin ablation and
skin coagulation.
Typical indications are:
• Sebaceous adenoma
• Acne scars
• Epidermal nevi (soft)
• Exophytic scars (flat scars, no keloids)
• Wrinkles (skin resurfacing)
• Lentigines (simplex, senilis)
• Nevi spili
• Stepped scars (e.g. blending of skin transplantation in marginal zone)
• Seborrhoeic keratosis
• Syringomas
• Xanthelasmas
Besides these, there is a whole series of other indications that are known to be success-
fully treated with an erbium laser.
Possible side effects
After treatment, an erythema and crusts form (with fractional technique the crusts are very small,
so the skin can look brownish). Depending on the size of the treated area, an edema can also
form. The erythema can persist in some cases for some weeks or months.
Pigment changes can appear specially in darker or tanned skin and are usually transient, but can
persist also.
In rare cases visible scars cannot be excluded.
In general the side effects with the fractional technique are less.
6.2.1.2 General Advice for Treatment
Er:YAG lasers accomplish superficial ablation with a minimum thermal in-depth effect. The physi-
cian can precisely track how deep a therapy penetrates. Because of its excellent visual results,
this method is reliable and safe.
For this reason, the top criterion for suitable laser settings should be the user’s visual self-check.
