6.2.2. Fractional treatment with MicroSpot handpiece (optional)
As an alternative to area-like removal of tissue, the MicroSpot handpiece allows you to apply a
series of micrometer-sized spots arranged in a certain mutual spacing pattern. Because these
spots are surrounded by untreated tissue, the method is less harmful and the healing progress
distinctly more rapid. Secondly, since untreated tissue is involved in the process of healing, ex-
tended skin areas are induced to renewal. Main applications of this method are the removal of
wrinkles and the improvement of skin texture.
The MicroSpot handpiece provides specifications as follows:
Diameter of a MicroSpot: about 350 - 600 µm
Number of MicroSpots: 169 (13 x 13)
Distribution pattern of spots: 13 x 13 mm
Portion of skin under treatment: 13 x 13 mm: 10% - 25%
Energy density (total fluence): 2 – 150 J/cm²
Pulse duration: 300 µs (normal), 100 µs (cold), 1000 µs (warm)
Number of pulses in a pulse train: 1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/10/11/12/13/14/15
Interval between pulse trains: 0/0.25/0.5/0.75/1.0/1.25/1.5/1.75/2.0 s
A maximum ablation amount of 5 µm can be achieved per J/cm²
. Typically, however, the actually
achieved ablation depth is much smaller, because tissue tends to have a varying water content
and the handpiece itself causes transmission loss.
The maximum energy density follows from the sum of the energy densities of all single pulses in
a pulse train. As a general rule, several pulses are applied to a given area spot (usually 4 pulses).
Although this proves adequate in the majority of applications, the number of pulses may be modi-
fied in the main menu.
