Chapter 4 Syntax and Data Types
Formats for Interface Messages
8. Between each of the data fields, the data separator (a comma <,>) must be
entered. See section 4.1.2.
9. Some headers allow data to be both sent to and requested from the amplifier
(commands and queries). Where this is the case, you can convert a command
header into a query by appending a “?”.
Command message: M_M A
10. Query Message: M_M?
4.1.4 Mnemonic Codes
The following general rules clarify the construction of the mnemonics (minimum
codes). The rules apply for all headers and data fields which use character type data.
1. If the first letter of every word produces a unique code, then this is the mne-
monic. For example, the header
DISPLAY_SET_UP becomes D_S_U
2. If the first letter of every word does not give a unique mnemonic, then include
two or more characters of one or more words until the mnemonic is unique. For
example, the message
ALARM_ON_OFF ON becomes A_O_O ON
ALARM_ON_OFF OFF becomes A_O_O OF
Notes:
Word concatenators are always required in mnemonics which include more than
one word, except immediately before the question mark (?) in an input message
header. Here, the inclusion of the word concatenator is optional.
In the tables and syntax diagrams throughout this interface manual, the mne-
monics are the characters appearing in bold within the headers and character
type data fields.
Headers are output either in full or in mnemonic form by the amplifier.
4.1.5 Message Terminator
The only legal Program Message Terminator character is the NL (line feed - deci-
mal 10). Using the IEEE–488 interface the NL character may be omitted if and
only if the EOI line of the interface is activated together with the last valid data
byte of the interface message.
On the serial interface the <Te> is considered to be a LF.
