PROPELLER SHAFT SEALS
WARNING
DO NOT ENTER THE ENGINE ROOM WHILE ONE OR BOTH ENGINES ARE OPERATING. THE ENGINE ROOM CONTAINS
MOVING, HOT MACHINERY. CHECK THAT THE ENGINES ARE OFF BEFORE INSPECTING THE PROPELLER SHAFT SEALS.
The propeller shaft extends through a shaft seal, which is a watertight tting. Check the shaft seal every month for
leakage. Contact your Carver dealer if signs of leakage are found.
PROPELLERS
WARNING
ALWAYS WEAR GLOVES WHEN HANDLING THE PROPELLER. THE PROPELLER BLADES ARE SHARP.
Inspect the propellers often. Keep a swim mask in the yacht to inspect the propellers while swimming. Out-of-balance or
damaged propellers can diminish the yacht’s performance by reducing speed, causing steering problems and creating
vibrations. Vibrations can lead to drivetrain damage.
Have the propellers balanced by an established propeller repair shop at least once a year. Repair or replace damaged
propellers.
A TIP FROM CARVER!
Consider purchasing and carrying a spare set of propellers onboard. Many marine dealers do not carry a full inventory
of replacement propellers. A spare set allows your vacation or cruise to continue in the event that the primary set of
propellers gets damaged.
STRUTS
Propeller shaft struts require very little maintenance. Within each strut is a cutlass bearing that provides a smooth surface
for the shaft to rotate. The cutlass bearings occasionally need to be replaced. However, bearing replacement is required
more often if the yacht is used in sand or within other abrasive materials. Have a marine technician inspect the strut
bearings when the yacht is removed from the water. Replace the bearings as recommended.
