Approved pyrotechnic equipment includes:
Handheld or aerial red ares
Handheld or oating orange smoke
Launchers for aerial red meteors or parachute ares
Approved non-pyrotechnic equipment includes:
Orange distress ag
Dye markers
Electric distress light.
No single signaling device is ideal under all conditions. Carrying a variety of visual distress signal equipment onboard is
important. Select devices with packaging that children ONLY will nd difcult to open, especially if children are onboard.
SOUND-SIGNALING DEVICE
The yacht must be equipped with an operable device that can produce a sound signal if conditions require.
REQUIRED SOUND DEVICES INCLUDE:
One horn is standard on all Carver models.
Yachts longer than 39 ft, 4 in. (12 m) must have one bell and one whistle. The devices must meet the COLREG Rules Act of
1972.
For details on the appropriate signals, refer to the Navigation Rules, International-Inland published by the U.S. Coast Guard.
RUNNING AND NAVIGATION LIGHTS
Running and navigation lights must be turned on for safe operation after dark.
Observe all navigation rules for meeting and passing.
Never run at high speeds during night operation.
Always use common sense and good judgment while cruising at night.
RADAR REFLECTORS
Radar reectors, if installed, should measure at least 18 in. diagonally. Place the reectors 12 ft, 0 in. (3.7 m) above the
waterline to ensure that other yachts with radar reectors have sight of your yacht. Reectors increase the signature of
yacht on radar.
FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
Fire extinguishers must be approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. The U.S. Coast Guard classies re extinguishers by the type
of re the extinguisher can extinguish. The re extinguisher classications include foam, carbon dioxide, chemical, and
halon. The following material details the standard extinguishing equipment for yachts:
Yachts exceeding 40 ft (12.2 m) but not exceeding 65 ft (19.8 m): The yacht has a xed re extinguishing system
approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. The owner must install either two Type B-Is or one Type B-II extinguisher onboard.
Mount all re extinguishers in a readily accessible location away from the engine room. All people onboard should know
the locations of the re extinguishers and should know how to operate the extinguishers.
If the re extinguisher has a charge indicator gauge, cold or hot weather may affect the gauge reading. Consult the
manufacturer’s manual supplied with the re extinguisher to determine the gauge’s accuracy.
