LIFT CHANNEL UPRIGHTS (STILES) AND SLING
(See Appendix ‘D’ in this manual for detailed Sling Assembly drawing)
1) The safety blocks are shipped in a small cardboard box. The blocks are covered with a
protective coating that must be removed. The best way to remove the coating is by
soaking them in a bucket of paint thinner. Once they are cleaned up, they are ready to
install.
2) There is a left and a right safety block. Ensure they are placed properly so that as the
sling lowers, the knurled wheel is driven up into the wedge. Bolt the safety blocks
securely, with lock washers, to the stile. Ensure the proper length bolts are used so that
they are threaded at least 1/2" into the safety block. See Figure # 20.
3) Loosely bolt the eight (8) guide shoes to the inside of the lift channel uprights and
assemble the lift frame (sling) between the guide rails.
Support the frame so that the
top of the cantilever arms are 1"
above the bottom landing. Use cement blocks, wood
or other suitable material to support the cantilever arms. Position the uprights on the rails
one side at a time, securing each side to the rails. Install the “X” braces (2 sets) on the
uprights and forks using 3/8" x 1" bolts, plus lock washers and nuts. The “X” braces are 1"
x 1/4" flat bar with slots in each end. ENSURE SLING IS “SQUARE” BEFORE
TIGHTENING “X” BRACES!
4) The cables are normally shipped coiled and tied with baling wire. One end of the cable
has a permanent SWAGED fitting attached, and the other end is taped to prevent
unraveling. The swaged end is the attachment to the sling lifting bracket and the free end
attaches to the dead end available on the Upstand Post.
CAUTION: When uncoiling the cable, never pull it out by its center. Undo the binding wire
and carefully “unroll” the cable. This should be carried out outside where there is more
space available, or on the building roof top, if possible. If the unrolling can be done on a
roof, then it is also a good idea to let the cable hang down over the side of the building
and “unwind” before installing. NEVER LET THE CABLE BECOME “KINKED” as this can
greatly reduce the safety and life of the cable.
REMEMBER THAT THE SAFETIES ARE A “LIFE SAVING
DEVICE” AND THEREFORE, INSTALL THEM WITH DUE
CARE AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND GOOD
WORKMANSHIP.
5) The cable has been installed in the sling lifting bracket with two clamps holding the
tension of the SAFETY ACTUATING SPRINGS. Do not remove the holding clamp until
ready to start the pump unit and place tension on the cables. The lifting bracket (with
attached cables) can now be placed so that the 1/2 hollow rod extends through each
safety block actuating lever. See Figure # 20. Using 8 carriage bolts, attach the lifting
bracket to the uprights.
