Use Caps and Plugs
Before transporting in dusty conditions or prolonged
storage, install caps and plugs to male and female
ends of pipe and to saver sub.
Replace Worn Saver Sub
Because each pipe comes in contact with the saver sub, check saver sub regularly for wear. Replace it
when it is worn, or it will damage your drill pipe. See page 140 for replacement procedure.
Precondition a new saver sub the same way you do new pipe. See “Precondition New Pipe” on page 109.
Rotate Pipe Order
Because the lead drill pipe is in the ground longer, it is subjected to higher shock loads and experiences
more wear. To help spread this wear evenly over all pipe, move the lead pipe from the previous job out of
the first position. See “Rotate Pipe Order” on page 110.
