ENGINE
3-4
CAUTION
Conduct inspections on level surfaces with
the engine stopped. Engine oil level cannot
be measured accurately if the vehicle is tilted,
or if the engine is running or has just been
turned off. Wait at least 30 minutes after stop-
ping the engine to inspect.
On a 4M5 engine vehicle, be sure to do the
following before inspecting the engine oil
level: Warm up the engine until the needle of
the water temperature gauge moves up and
then wait for at least 30 minutes. Failure to do
this will lead you into determining an oil level
lower than the true level.
Note: If you check engine oil level immediately after
the engine has been stopped, all the oil that
has traveled to each engine part still has not
dropped into the oil pan, and the oil quantity
will appear to be less than it actually is.
CHECKING BY USE OF OIL LEVEL GAUGE
<4D3 engine vehicles>
1. Pull out the oil level gauge and wipe oil from it.
2. Insert oil level gauge again, then slowly pull it
out.
3. If the oil on the gauge is in the range illustrated,
the oil level is adequate.
If inadequate, replenish with prescribed oil.
Also, if the engine oil is dirty, replace it.
4. After inspection, insert the oil level gauge all the
way in to return it.
