Cardiac Output
Problem:
Why does the monitor continue to display a PLEASE
WAIT or UNSTABLE BT message?
Answer:
The monitor is searching for a stable baseline
temperature. The message clears after 12 seconds, only
if a stable baseline temperature is found.
Intervention:
Check the patient and patient setup.
Check for the following factors which may influence
the baseline temperature:
Significant amount of Respiratory Variation.
Rapid IV Solutions Infusion.
Check the injectate temperature (IT). A minimum
temperature difference of 10˚ Celsius is
recommended between the patient blood temperature
and solution temperature.
Replace the Injectate Temperature cable.
The Swan-Ganz Catheter itself may be damaged.
Problem:
Why does the monitor calculating a CO without any
solution being injected?
Answer:
The monitor is sensing a change in the patient’s blood
temperature consistent with an injection.
Intervention:
Check the patient and patient setup.
Check for the following factors which may influence
the baseline temperature:
Significant amount of Respiratory Variation.
Rapid IV Solutions Infusion.
