NOTE: You cannot use the management ports to perform the initial configuration of the PTX1000.
You must configure the management ports through the console connection before you can
successfully connect to the PTX1000 by using these ports. See “Performing the Initial Software
Configuration for the PTX1000” on page 92.
Ensure that you have an appropriate cable available. See “Cable Specifications for Console and Management
Connections for the PTX1000” on page 69 and “Determining Transceiver Support for the PTX1000” on
page 58.
To connect a PTX1000 to a network for out-of-band management (see Figure 35 on page 90):
1. Connect one end of the cable to one of the two management ports—labeled MGMT—on the PTX1000.

Connecting the PTX1000 to a Management Console
The PTX1000 has a console port with an RJ-45 connector. Use the console port to connect the router
directly to a management console, such as a laptop, or to a console server.
Ensure that you have an RJ-45 to DB-9 rollover cable available. An RJ-45 cable with an RJ-45 to DB-9
adapter is provided with the PTX1000.
