Checking and adjusting the steering head support *
The steering head support must be checked regularly for play. To check,
prop the motorcycle on the frame keeping the front wheel off the ground.
Try to move the fork back and forth. To adjust, loosen the 5 clamp screws
1 on the upper triple clamp and turn the end screw 2 until no clearance
is left. Do not tighten the end screw since you may damage the bearings.
Gently tap on the upper triple clamp to avoid distortion and tighten the
5 clamp screws to 20 Nm.
WARNING
T
HE HANDLING PERFORMANCE WILL BE UNSTEADY IF THERE IS PLAY IN THE STEERING
HEAD SUPPORT
. THIS COULD CAUSE YOU TO LOSE CONTROL OF YOUR MOTORCYCLE.
!
CAUTION
!
IF YOU CONTINUE TO DRIVE WITH PLAY IN THE STEERING HEAD SUPPORT, THE BEARINGS
AND THE BEARING SEATS IN THE FRAME WILL EVENTUALLY BE DESTROYED
.
The steering head bearings should be regreased at least once a year.
Bleeder screws for the telescopic fork
After 5 hours of competitive driving, unscrew the bleeder screws 3 several
turns to allow any overpressure to escape from the forks. To bleed, jack up
the motorcycle until the front wheel no longer touches the ground. If the
motorcycle is primarily used on the road, this work can be performed during
the periodical vehicle service.
!
CAUTION
!
EXCESSIVE PRESSURE IN THE FORKS CAN ALSO CAUSE THE FORK TO LEAK. IF YOUR FORK
LEAKS
, LOOSEN THE BLEEDER SCREW BEFORE YOU HAVE THE SEALING ELEMENTS
REPLACED
.
Thoroughly clean the dust boots, outer tubes and fork tubes and treat with
silicone spray. Press the dust boots back into the outer tubes by hand.
WARNING
M
AKE SURE NO SILICONE OIL DRIPS ON THE FRONT TIRE OR THE BRAKE DISKS SINCE THIS
WOULD CONSIDERABLY REDUCE THE TIRE
'S ROAD GRIP AND THE BRAKING EFFECT OF THE
FRONT BRAKE
.
Cleaning the dust boots on the telescopic fork
The dust boots 4 scrape dust and coarse dirt from the fork tube. Dirt can
eventually penetrate behind the dust boots. If the dirt is not removed, the
oil sealing rings behind the dust boots may not seal properly.
Pry the dust boots out of the outer tube with a screwdriver and slide down.
