Cleaning the air filter *
A dirty air filter impairs the air-flow rate, reduces engine performance
increases fuel consumption. In extreme cases dirt can get into the engine
and cause damage. Be sure to service the air filter regularly.
Remove the 4 screws
1 and the screw 2 on the side cover.
Remove the filter box cover. Detach the filter retaining bracket
3 and lift
the air filter out of the filter box together with the filter support
4.
!
CAUTION
!
– Do not clean the air filter with fuel or petroleum since these agents will
corrode the foam. KTM recommends "MOTOREX" products to clean
(MOTOREX BIO DIRT REMOVER) and oil the air filter (MOTOREX
LIQUID BIO POWER).
– Do not drive the motorcycle without an air filter. The penetrating dust
and dirt can cause damage and excessive wear.
– Engine oil can temporarily be used in exceptional cases.
Thoroughly wash the air filter with special cleaning fluid and allow to dry.
Press out the water from the air filter but do not wring. Lubricate the dry air
filter with high-grade filter oil. Check the carburetor connection boot for
damage and a good fit.
Mount the air filter on the filter support. Attach the air filter and filter sup-
port to the frame, making sure it is centered and fix with the wing screw.
Mount the filter box cover and tighten the screw on the side cover
.
Checking the engine oil level
You can check the engine oil level when the engine is cold or warm.
Place the motorcycle on a level surface (on the main stand).
You should be able to see the engine oil at the lower edge of the inspection
glass
A when the engine is cold.
The engine oil should reach the upper edge of the inspection glass
B when
the engine is warm.
Add engine oil if necessary.
!
CAUTION
!
–NOT ENOUGH ENGINE OIL OR LOW-GRADE ENGINE OIL WILL CAUSE PREMATURE
ENGINE WEAR
.
–D
O NOT EXCEED THE MAXIMUM LEVEL.
–D
O NOT ALLOW TO DROP BELOW THE MINIMUM LEVEL.
Engine oil
Automobile engine oil used to be used for four-stroke motorcycles before
there were separate motorcycle specifications. Different technical develop-
ments made it necessary to have a separate specification for four-stroke
motorcycles - the JASO T903 MA standard. Whereas car engines require
long changing intervals, motorcycle engines require a higher power output
at higher speeds. Most motorcycle engines also use the same oil to lubricate
the transmission and the clutch. The JASO MA standard responds to these
special requirements.
Only use fully synthetic engine oils that meet the JASO MA quality require-
ments (see information on the can).
KTM recommends Motorex Power Synt 4T in the 10W/50 viscosity (for
temperatures over 0°C) or 5W/40 (for temperatures under 0°C).
