Also, when this grains with high humidity levels are exposed again to the air (oxygen) at the extraction mo-
ment, it is produced a fast aerobic microorganism multiplication that quickly degrade the material. Hence, it
must be dried immediatly after being extracted and before being commercialized.
BAG DURABILITY
The maximum allowed storage time is a very important data and must be checked out with the bag supplier.
The plastic is degraded by action of the solar radiation and temperature, reason by which its outer layer is
white colored and is provided with additives that retard (but not avoid) its degradation.
In consequence, the duration of a bag once lled will depend of the geographic zone (latitude) in wich it is
located and the season of the year in wich its lling its done.
I spite of this and as a practical rule, generally it is seuggested thaty the bags do not remain exposed more
than one “summer”
BAGS CONTROL
The bagger success is closely related to the control that is accomplished to the bags during the storage
time, hence is important to carry out practically daily inspections. It must be taken all the possible precau-
tions to maintain the integrity of the plastic membrane or to restitute it quickly every time it gets perforated.
Remember that small holes, cause high levels of maerial degradation.
The agressive agents are diverse, and some of them can be prevented or controlled.
• Rodent and other wild animal attack: it must be avoided during the bag making the pour of grain on
the ground since it represents an excellent attraction for those animals. The daily control is very im-
portant and in the case of detecting brakings those must be sealed immediatly. To avoid its entance in
the storage zone, it must be maintained freeo of weeds and carry out an electric fence with three wires
placed 5, 15 an 30 cm ( 2, 6 and 12 in= from the ground.
• Ηail: after a hall storm must be checked immediately, if any damages have been produced. If the dama-
ge is light, can be repaired with apropiate tape. If it is serious, the only safe solution is to sell the grains
or bag again. Remember thst a higher stretch of the bag, increases the risk of hail damage.
• Fire danger: the winter crops stubbles are the ones that invlove mor risk in this aspect. If the storage
zone is nearness of these elds, it results to be advantageous to plw or to rake the perimeter to avoid
re spreading.
• Sampling: is important to take samples periodically to control the evolution of the stored material quali-
ty. These can be taken by means of probes or in its defect putting two tape sections in vertical direction
and overlapped, in the zone of less bga stretch, and do the cut above these overlapped tapes.
