This document describes the McConnel SR460/620/820 series of trailed flexwing rotary mowers, designed for ground vegetation control. These heavy-duty machines are available in 4.6m, 6.2m, and 8.2m cut widths and are equipped with hydraulic rams for flexwing folding, making them legal for road transportation. They can be specified with various axle, wheel, and blade combinations to suit specific user requirements.
Function Description:
The SR460/620/820 flexwing rotary mowers are primarily designed for cutting set-aside, stubble, and pasture. They are suitable for use on level, undulating, or inclined ground and have a duty cycle of 1000 hours per annum. The machines are capable of cutting vegetation up to 100mm (4 inches) in thickness. They feature anti-clockwise and clockwise rotating rotors, fitted with left-hand (LH) and right-hand (RH) blades, to ensure a consistent and quality cut and efficient material flow. The hydraulic folding mechanism allows for easy transition between working and transport positions.

Usage Features:
- Hitching and Unhitching: The manual provides detailed instructions for connecting and disconnecting hydraulic hoses and electric cables, as well as hitching and unhitching the machine to the tractor. It emphasizes the use of clevis or K80 drawbar hitches and warns against hook hitches. Wear pads are supplied for the towing eye to maximize longevity.
- PTO Shaft: The PTO shaft requires proper setup and adjustment for first use, including shortening to the correct length and performing "bottoming out" and "engagement" tests to ensure adequate clearance and overlap. It is crucial to use the correct PTO speed (540 or 1000 RPM) and spline quantity for the specific machine and tractor.
- Unfolding and Folding: The hydraulic rams facilitate unfolding and folding the flexwings for transport. Safety precautions, such as ensuring bystanders are clear and wing locking pins/ratchet straps are fitted, are highlighted.
- Setting Cutting Height: The cutting height can be adjusted via a minimum height control sleeve (SR460/620) or an adjustable barrel (SR820). Fine and coarse adjustments are detailed, with recommendations to set wings slightly higher than the center chassis for a level cut.
- Work Site Assessment: Operators are advised to thoroughly inspect the work site for foreign debris, overhead obstructions, and potential fire hazards before mowing.
- Safe Driving Practices: Emphasizes slow speeds, gentle steering, and adherence to road traffic regulations during transport. The tractor must be adequately weighted (at least 20% over machine weight) to maintain steering control.
- Emergency Procedures: Instructions are provided for stopping the machine in an emergency, especially if it hits an object or develops unusual vibrations.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Operators are required to wear safety glasses, hard hats, steel-toe footwear, gloves, hearing protection, and close-fitting clothing.
Maintenance Features:
- Periodic Maintenance: Regular inspection for loose or missing fasteners, worn or broken parts, and leaks is essential. All worn or damaged parts should be replaced with genuine McConnel parts.
- Lubrication and Greasing: Detailed greasing schedules are provided for gearboxes, PTO shafts (input, center coupling, inner wing, outer wing), drawbar, hydraulic rams, axle mount brackets, wheel bogies, and wheel hubs. Specific grease types (NLGI #2 Molybdenum Disulphide Grease) and oil grades (SAE EP80-90W or GL-4/GL-5 for splitter, 85W-140 for rotor) are specified.
- Gearbox Maintenance: Instructions for checking oil levels, draining, and refilling gearboxes are included. Oil changes are recommended after the first 50 hours and then every 500 hours.
- PTO Shaft Maintenance: Guidance on replacing bearing rings in input and wing PTO shafts, including disassembly and reassembly steps.
