adhesionbetweenthetyresandtheroadsurfacecausing
thewheelstolock(onslipperyroads,forexample),then
ABSwillautomaticallycomeintooperation.
Thiswillberecognisablebyarapidpulsationfeltthrough
thebrakepedal.
BrakinginanEmergency
DONOTpumpthebrakepedalatanytime;
thiswillinterruptoperationoftheABSand
mayincreasebrakingdistance.
Ifanemergencysituationoccurs,thedrivershouldapply
fullbrakingeffortevenwhentheroadsurfaceisslippery.
Theanti-lockbrakingsystemwillconstantlymonitorthe
rotationalspeedofthewheelsandvarybrakingpressureto
eachwheelaccordingtotheamountoftractionavailable.
Thiswillensurethatthewheelsdonotlockandthatthe
carisbroughttoahaltintheshortestpossibledistancefor
theprevailingroadsurfaceconditions.
Note:Onsoftsurfacessuchaspowderysnow,sandor
gravel,thebrakingdistancerequiredbytheanti-lock
brakingsystemmaybegreaterthanfornon-ABS
braking,eventhoughimprovedsteeringwouldbe
experienced.Thisisbecausethenaturalactionof
lockedwheelsonsoftsurfacesistobuildupawedge
ofsurfacematerialinfrontwhichassiststhecarto
stop.
