7.4Wi-Fitroubleshooting
BeforetroubleshootingproblemswithyourWi-Ficonnection,ensurethat
youhavefollowedtheWi-Filocationrequirementsguidanceprovidedin
therelevantinstallationinstructionsandperformedapowercycle/reboot
ofthedevicesyouareexperiencingproblemswith.Thetroubleshooting
informationbelowcanbeusedifyouareexperiencingproblemsconnecting
yourroutertoanexternalWi-Finetwork(DockWLAN)suchastheWi-Fi
providedatamarinaorifyouareexperiencingproblemsconnectingmobile
devicestotherouter’sWi-FiaccesspointBoatWi-Fi).
Cannotfindnetwork
IfyoucannotfindtheWi-Finetwork,itcouldbeforoneofthefollowing
reasons:
•Wi-Fiisdisabled—EnabletheWi-Ficonnectiononthedeviceyouare
tryingtoconnecttothenetwork.
•Routernotbroadcasting—Ensurethattherouteryouaretryingto
connecttoisbroadcastingitsSSID.Ifyouhavenocontrolovertherouter’s
settingsordonotwanttheroutertobroadcastitsSSIDthenyouwillneed
toconnecttotheroutermanuallybyenteringitSSIDandpassword.
•Routerisoutofrange—Wi-Fiperformancedegradesoverdistanceso
devicesfartherawaywillreceivelessnetworkbandwidth.Devicescloseto
theirmaximumWi-Firangewillexperienceslowconnectionspeeds,signal
dropoutsornotbeingabletoconnectatall.Movethedeviceclosertothe
routerandtrytoconnect.
•Signalblockedordegraded—Bulkheads,decksandotherheavy
structurecandegradeandevenblocktheWi-Fisignal.Dependingonthe
thicknessandmaterialuseditmaynotalwaysbepossibletopassaWi-Fi
signalthroughcertainstructures.Ifpossible,removetheobstruction,ortry
movingthedevicesothattheobstructionisnolongerpresent.
Cannotconnecttothenetwork
Ifthenetworkisavailablebutyoucannotconnecttoitcheckthefollowing:
•Incorrectnetworkcredentials—Ensureyouareenteringthepassword
correctly.Networkpasswordsarecasesensitive.
•Wrongnetwork—Ensureyouareselectingthecorrectnetwork.
•Routerisoutofrange—Wi-Fiperformancedegradesoverdistanceso
devicesfartherawaywillreceivelessnetworkbandwidth.Devicescloseto
theirmaximumWi-Firangewillexperienceslowconnectionspeeds,signal
dropoutsornotbeingabletoconnectatall.Movethedeviceclosertothe
routerandtrytoconnect.
•Signalblockedordegraded—Bulkheads,decksandotherheavy
structurecandegradeandevenblocktheWi-Fisignal.Dependingonthe
thicknessandmaterialuseditmaynotalwaysbepossibletopassaWi-Fi

connectormaintainanetworkconnection.TrychangingtheWi-Fichannel
usedbytherouteryouaretryingtoconnectto.Y oucanuseafreeWi-Fi
analyzerapponasmartdevicetohelpyouchoosealesscongestedWi-Fi
channel.
•Interference(2.4GHzfrequency)—Interferencecanbecausedbyother
devicesthatusethe2.4GHzfrequencySeelistbelowofsomecommon
devicesthatusethe2.4GHzfrequency:
