JUN. 1999
BARBER COLMAN GOVERNOR ADJUSTMENTS (Ford Engines)
1. Start and run engine until at normal operating temperature.
2. Set the “D”, “I” AND “GAIN” potentiometers as shown in Figure 5-11.
3. Shut engine off. Disconnect throttle actuator wires at throttle actuator.
4. Attach a meter to wires 98 and 98A on the EDA board in the lower control panel. Set meter to Khz. Attach a
tachometer to the engine.
5. Start engine and and adjust the mechanical idle to 600 RPM’s (1.35Khz) using the throttle stop screw on the
throttle shaft.
6. Shut engine off. Reconnect actuator to control box.
7. Select platform with key switch and start engine from the platform control console.
8. Adjust engine governor to 1400 RPM’s (3.15 Khz) by jumping terminal 9 to 10 to increase RPM’s or terminal 9
to terminal 11 to decrease RPM’s.
9. With speed selector switch in low speed position and the foot switch held down, adjust engine goovernor to
1800 RPM’s (4.05 Khz) by jumping terminal 9 to 10 to increase RPM’s or terminal 9 to terminal 11 to decrease
RPM’s.
10. With speed selector switch in high speed position and the foot switch held down, adjust engine goovernor to
2600 RPM’s (5.85 Khz) by jumping terminal 9 to 10 to increase RPM’s or terminal 9 to terminal 11 to decrease
RPM’s.
11. Recheck engine idle, low and high settings. Readjust if necessary.
12. Select “Base” with the key select switch.
13. Locate the “GAIN” Potentiometer on the Governor Control Box and turn it clockwise until the engine surges.
Turn the “GAIN” potentiometer counter clockwise until the engine stablizes. NOTE: If Engine stays stable at
100% Gain, manually bump the carburetor throttle linkage to cause the engine to surge. Turn the “GAIN”
Potentiometer counter clockwise until the engine “surges” 2-3 times after bumping. If the Engine stays stable
at 100% Gain after “bumping” the throttle linkage, leave at the 100% setting.
14. Locate the “D” potentiometer and repeat step 13.
15. Wile the engine is running, remove battery power to the governor control box (terminal 1). Let the engine wind
down to approximately 1/2 speed and reinstall battery power. While monitoring engine RPM, repeat this procedure
and adjust the “I” potentiometer clockwise until the engine just slightly overshoots the set speed. If the engine
overshoot is too great, turn the “I” potentiometer counterclockwise until satisfied.
