Troubleshooting Missing ECU Data in Events
ECU Data may sometimes be missing from the vehicle data displayed on the SmartDrive Event Player
when video events are played, for a variety of reasons. The SR4 Diagnostic Mode does not detect
ECU errors or faulty/improper connections. Before troubleshooting the vehicle ECU connection,
please verify the listed steps below:
1. Verify vehicle was running when the event was triggered, if not, trigger a new event with
the vehicle running.
2. Verify with a digital multimeter if the ignition wire is connected to a True Ignition Source.
Have the technician verify by confirming the key light on the controller turns on and off
when the vehicles ignition is cycled.
3. Cable Verification: Gather the vehicle information (Make, Model, Year, and VIN) along with
the Part # ; contact Technical Support you are using the correct SmartDrive ECU cable
required for this vehicle type. If the correct cable is not installed, replace it with the correct
one.
4. All vehicles using the OBDII cable (104-0009-0013-00) are classified as Light Duty Vehicles.
Vehicles using any other cable type are classified as Heavy Duty.
5. If there are multiple device connected to the vehicle Data Link Connector, ensure the
installed VID cable is the last device connected in Line/Series.
6. Step 5 – Light Duty and Medium Duty passenger vehicles with an OBDII Diagnostic Port can
only support one device connected to the port. If a 3
rd
party device is connected to the
vehicles OBD II port, vehicle data will not be accurately gathered and could potentially
damage the vehicle. If the 3
rd
party device is connected to the vehicles OBD II is an
InterMotive Interlock device, contact Technical Support for evaluation.
Interfacing with OBDII:
Light Duty and Medium Duty passenger vehicles equipped with an OBDII diagnostic port are
designed to support only one single device connected to the port. If a 3
rd
party device is connected
to the vehicles OBD II port, vehicle data may not be accurately gathered and could potential damage
the vehicle. If the 3
rd
party device is an InterMotive Gateway Interlock, contact Technical Support for
evaluation.
Safety Interlock Devices:
The purpose of wheelchair interlocks is to prevent operation of the vehicle and/or wheelchair ramp
unless certain safety conditions exist. While the wheelchair ramp is in operation, the interlock will
not allow the vehicle’s transmission to be taken out of park. If it receives any diagnostic OBDII CAN
messages on the vehicle’s network, it deactivates its normal operation and goes into a failsafe
mode. In this failsafe mode, the wheelchair ramp will not operate and the vehicle cannot be shifted
out of park. This feature presents a challenge to aftermarket telematics systems as a single CAN
OBDII message transmitted can disrupt operation of the customer’s vehicle and/or wheelchair ramp.
