5-8 Switches and controls
NOTE:
For safety, the engine in a manual transmission
vehicle cannot be started unless the shift lever is in
the neutral position.
In an automatic transmission vehicle, the engine
cannot be started unless the shift selector is in “P”
(park) or “N” (neutral). It is safer to start the engine
with the shift selector in “P” (park). Start the engine
with the shift selector in “N” (neutral) only when
absolutely necessary; for example, if the engine
stops while the vehicle is on a railroad crossing.
2 Starting procedure
1. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position.
2. Check whether or not the engine pre-heat
indicator illuminates.
If the engine pre-heat indicator does not illu-
minate, hold down the clutch pedal and turn
the ignition switch to the “START” position to
start the engine. Do not depress the accelerator
pedal.
If the engine pre-heat indicator illuminates,
wait until it goes off. After the light goes off, hold
down the clutch pedal and turn the ignition
switch to the “START” position to start the
engine.
