Finishing Touches Chemical Finishing and Polishing
Epoxy
Epoxy is a two-part chemical which coats the model, giving it a smoother appear-
ance and also acting as a structural reinforcement.
The epoxy is a mixture of polyester resin and styrene monomer which creates a
hard shell and provides reinforcement for the model. However, it requires
twenty-four hours of curing time.
Epoxy has a high thermal reaction temperature which may deform a model with
thin walls — especially one made from investment casting wax. Placing the
coated model in a freezer lowers the thermal reaction temperature, but may
cause the coating to separate from the model.
Spray paint will accomplish the same smoothing effect as epoxy, but does not
add reinforcement. When applied over a model which has been coated with
epoxy, spray paint gives the model an extremely smooth surface.
Expansion Foam
Use only expansion foam with a long set time. The set time is based on the heat
generated during set time. Long set time equals lower heat.
