Disassembly (Fig. 96)
1. Removeoilfromsteeringcylinderintoadrainpanby
slowly pumping the cylinder shaft. Plug both ports and
clean the outside of the cylinder.
IMPORTANT: Prevent damage when clamping the
steeringcylinderintoavise;clampontheclevisend
of the barrel ONLY.
2. Mount steering cylinder securely in a vise by clamp-
ingontheclevisend ofthebarrel.Useof avisewithsoft
jaws is recommended.
3. Using aspannerwrench,rotatehead clockwiseuntil
theedgeofther etainingringappearsinthebarrelopen-
ing. Insert a screwdriver under the beveled edge of the
retainingringtostarttheretainingringthroughtheopen-
ing. Rotate the head counter--clockwise to remove re-
taining ring from barrel and head.
4. Remove plugs from ports. Extract shaft, head and
piston by carefully twisting and pulling on the shaft.
IMPORTANT: To prevent shaft damage, do not
clamp shaft surface in a vise.
5. Using a w rench on shaft flats to prevent shaft from
rotating, remove lock nut.
6. Carefully slide piston and then head from shaft.
7. Taking care to not scratch or damage the piston, re-
move wear ring, cap seal and O--ring from the piston.
8. Taking care to not scratch or damage the head, re-
move O--ring, back--up ring, wiper and u--cup from the
head.
