5.6 BACKING-UP
To new drivers, backing up can be very difficult. However by following some general guidelines and a little
practice, you can become quite adept at backing your trailer.
Follow these guidelines when learning to back-up:
1. Drive to a large open area (field, parking lot,
etc.) and stop with the unit in a straight line.
2. Set the side rear view mirrors so you can see
back past both sides of the trailer.
3. Grasp the bottom of the steering wheel while
backing up. The bottom of the steering wheel
will go in the same direction as the trailer.
4. Back up slowly and carefully.
5. Turn the steering wheel in the direction that you
want the trailer to go.
6. Look through both side mirrors to monitor the
position of the trailer.
7. Use a spotter on the drivers side to help direct
you when backing up in tight congested areas.
8. Keep the trailer angle as small as possible
while backing. If the angle becomes sharp,
stop and pull forward to straighten out. Then
resume backing up.
With a little practice and patience, you will be able
to back-up easily. A spotter is always recom-
mended to see behind the trailer while backing up.
