SECTION 2 - OPERATION
BEFORE STARTING THE MACHINE
MACHINE WALK-AROUND INSPECTION
For maximum service life of the machine, make a thorough walk-around inspection before starting the engine.
Look around and under the machine for loose bolts, asphalt build-up, oil or coolant leaks, and broken or worn parts.
Tighten, clean or replace as necessary.
NOTE: Accumulated grease and oil on a machine is a fire hazard. Remove this debris with steam cleaning or high
pressure water, at least every 1000 service hours or each time any significant quantity of oil is spilled on the machine.
NOTE: Keep a close watch for leaks. If leaking is observed, find the source and correct the leak. Check the fluid
levels more frequently than recommended if leaking is suspected or observed.
Check all of the oil, coolant, and fuel levels.
Inspect for and remove any trash build-up in the engine compartment.
Inspect the cooling system for leaks, faulty hoses, and trash build-up. Correct any leaks and remove any trash from
the radiator.
Inspect all engine belts for worn, cracked, or frayed edges. Replace if worn, cracked, frayed, or broken.
Inspect the hydraulic system for leaks. Inspect the tank, pumps, cylinder rod seals, hoses, tubes, plugs, joints, and
fittings. Correct any leaks.
Inspect tires for damage and proper inflation. Replace any missing valve caps.
Make sure the covers and guards are firmly in place. Inspect for damage.
Inspect the steps, walkways, and handholds for their condition and cleanliness.
Replace lines or hoses if any of the following conditions are found:
• End fittings damaged or leaking
• Outer covering chafed or cut and wire reinforcement exposed
• Outer covering ballooning
• Evidence of kinking or crushing of the flexible part of hose
• Amoring embedded in the outer cover
• End fittings displaced
• Make sure that all clamps, guards, and heat shields are installed correctly to prevent vibrations, rubbing
against other parts, and excessive heat during operation.
