Onabroadcastnetwork,neighborrelationisalsoestablishedthroughthreetimesof
handshaking.TheL1intermediatesystemsendsL1LANIIHPDUstothebroadcast
addressAllL1ISs,andinterceptspacketsbasedonthisaddress.TheL2intermediate
systemsendsL2LANIIHPDUstothebroadcastaddressAllL2ISs,andintercepts
packetsbasedonthisaddress.
TocreateaneighborforL1,theintermediatesystemreceivesaL1LANIIHPDU
packetonthebroadcastaddressAllL1ISs.Itcompareseveryareaaddressinthe
receivedIIHPDUwiththelocallyconguredareaaddress.Iftheareaaddressesdo
notmatcheachother,theneighborcannotbecreated.
WhentheintermediatesystemreceivesaLANIIHPDUpacket,itcheckswhetherthe
neighboralreadyexistsinitsneighbordatabase.
àTheneighbor'sMACissimilartotheMACsourceaddressinthePDU.
àTheneighborsystemIDisconsistentwiththatofthePDU.
àTheneighbortypesarealsoconsistentwitheachother.
Iftheaboveconditionsarecompliedwith,theneighborexists,andtheintermediate
systemupdatesthetimer,priority,andneighborareaaddressesaccordingtothe
valuesinthePDU.Iftheaboveconditionsarenotcompliedwith,forexample,the
MACaddressesareinconsistentwitheachother,thispacketisdropped.
IftheneighbortypeisnotconsistentwiththesystemID,thisneighborisconsidered
tobeanewneighbor,andthisneighborisaddedtotheneighbordatabase.Thestate
ofthisneighborwillbesettoINIT.Theintermediatesystemthencheckstheneighbor
TLVcarriedintheIIHPDUpacket.IfitsMACaddressiscontainedintheneighborTLV,
thestateoftheneighborissettoUP ,andanIIHPDUpacketissent.Theintermediate
systemneighborTLVofthePDUwillcarrytheMACaddressoftheneighbor.
AftertheneighborreceivestheIIHPDUpacket,itperformsthesimilaroperations.If
thisneighbordoesnotexists,theneighborisaddedtoitsneighborstatedatabase
andthestateissettoINIT .TheintermediatesystemqueriesitsMACaddressinthe
IIHPDUpacketandsetsthestatetoUP .Fortheprocess,seeFigure4-4.
