Figure 11: Compensator Assembly
Compensator Assembly
Description
The sub-sea pressure compensator, illustrated in Error! Reference source
not found., is used to pressure compensate the electric motor, gearbox and
front bearing assembly. The compensator consists of a spring-loaded rubber
diaphragm and marine plastic housing, and is filled with Tellus 10 or similar
hydraulic oil.
The internal pressure is proportional to the depth of water the system is
operating in, and will always be approximately 0.5 bar higher than the
surrounding pressure.
By operating in this manner, any failures in the seals of the system will result
in oil leaving the pressurised system, as opposed to water entering the
system.
Observation of the diaphragm pressure indicator in the bottom of the unit can
be used to identify the pressure status. A fully pressurised system is signified
by approximately 75mm of indicator protruding from the bottom of the
compensator
