Crankshaft Main Bearing Journal
Clearance
Special Tool(s)
NOTE: Crankshaft main bearing journals must be within
specifications before checking journal clearance.
1. Remove the crankshaft main bearing caps and
bearings.
2. Lay a piece of Plastigage® across the face of
each crankshaft main surface.
NOTE: Do not turn the crankshaft while doing this
procedure.
3. Install and remove the crankshaft main bearing
cap.
4. Verify the crankshaft journal clearance.
If it is out of specification, replace as necessary
Bearing Inspection
Inspect bearings for the following defects. Possible
causes are shown:
Cratering – fatigue failure (A)
Spot polishing – improper seating (B)
Scratching – dirty (C)
Base exposed – poor lubrication (D)
Both edges worn – journal damaged (E)
One edge worn – journal tapered or bearing not
seated (F)
