11 Bolus Calculator
11.1 Introduction
Before administering a bolus, patients
usually need to calculate the amount of
insulin to administer based on parameters
such as the amount of carbohydrates they
are eating. This process can be prone to
errors because there are many parameters
to consider.
The Bolus Calculator suggestion is
calculated as follows:
Bolus Suggestion =
Meal Bolus + Correction Bolus – Active Insulin
Meal bolus is used to compensate for
increased blood glucose due to eating:
Meal bolus (U) =
The Bolus Calculator requires the
following information:
1) Current blood glucose level (from internal
BG meter)
2) Target blood glucose level (user setting ‒
confirmed by your healthcare professional)
3) Carbohydrate ratio (confirmed by your
healthcare professional)
4) Carbohydrate intake (user input)
5) Insulin sensitivity factor (confirmed by
your healthcare professional.)
6) Negative/Reverse correction (user setting ‒
confirmed by your healthcare professional)
7) Active insulin time (confirmed by your
healthcare professional.)

The PDA contains a bolus calculator that
can suggest a bolus size based on your
input. Once the settings are configured
properly, the bolus calculator can make a
bolus size suggestion after you test your
blood glucose level and enter the amount of
carbohydrates that you will be eating. The
bolus calculator can also take into account
the amount of insulin that is currently being
used in your body and make corrections to
the suggested bolus size.
