4 CONFIGURATION
The TR-4800E Tally Router is primarily configured and controlled through the Ethernet port using the
SNMP and Quartz protocols. The serial ports (see section 2.3) are used for initial configuration and for
optional serial-based Quartz protocol control.
4.1 SETTING THE IP ADDRESS
Usually the first configuration step is to assign an IP address to the tally router. This can be done using
the command line interface on the Serial1 port.
1. Connect the serial port to a PC or laptop computer.
2. Open the serial port using a terminal program such as HyperTerminal.
3. Configure the port for 115200 BAUD, 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit.
4. Apply power to the TR-4800E and wait 20 seconds for it to boot up.
5. Press ENTER in the terminal and the “CLI>” command line interface prompt should appear.
The IP address of the unit can be set with the “ifconfig” command. The general format of the
command is shown as follows:
ifconfig 0 inet [IP] netmask [SUBNETMASK] broadcast [BROADCAST] gateway [GATEWAY]
Assign an unused IP address that is compatible with your network’s addressing scheme. Below is an
example of a typical command:
ifconfig 0 inet 172.21.1.75 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 172.21.1.255 gateway 172.21.1.1
Once the command has been entered, the tally router will start using the IP address immediately.
Perform a “ping” test to see if the connection is working.
