The device can be deployed as part of a VCS and IP fabrics. For advanced procedures to congure the device for VCS and IP fabrics,
refer to the Network OS Management Conguration Guide, Extreme Network OS IP Fabrics Conguration Guide, and the Extreme
Network OS Command Reference.
Items required
The following items are required for initial setup and verication of the device:
The device, mounted and installed with the required power supply and fan assemblies, transceivers, and cables; and connected
to a power source
A workstation computer with a terminal emulator application installed, such as HyperTerminal for Windows
An unused IP address with corresponding subnet mask and gateway address
A serial cable with an RJ-45 connector
RJ-45 to DB-9 adapter
An Ethernet cable
Access to an FTP server or USB device for backing up (uploading) or downloading the device conguration (optional)
Providing power to the device
Perform the following steps to provide power to the device.
1. Connect the power cords to both power supplies, and then to power sources on separate circuits to protect against failure.
Ensure that the power cords have a minimum service loop of 15.2 cm (6 in.) available and are routed to avoid stress.
2. For the VDX 6740,
ip the switch on each power supply to I.
For the VDX 6740T, the power supplies power up as soon as they are plugged in.
The power supply LEDs display green. The power LED on the front of the device turns green as well. The system status LED on
the front panel will be amber until POST completes and then it will turn green.
NOTE
Power is supplied to the device as soon as the rst power supply is connected and powered
on.
3. After POST is complete, verify that the device power and status LEDs on the port side of the device are green.
Connecting an AC power cord
Use the supplied power cords. Ensure the facility power receptacle is the correct type, supplies the required voltage, and is properly
grounded.
Perform the following steps to connect to AC power:
1. Connect the power cords to both power supplies.
2. Route the cords so they will be out of the way when connected to the power source. Ensure that the power cords have a
minimum service loop of 15.2 cm (6 in.) available and are routed to avoid stress.
