Uni- or Bi-directional Traffic Control
Vehicles must pass from one loop
to the next without loss of detection
Dimension “A” = 6 ft minimum to 10 feet
maximum (305 cm).
Dimension “B” = 2 ft min. to 4 feet max.
(61 to 122 cm) between loop and edge
of roadway, is recommended.
Dimension “C” = 4 ft min to 8 ft max
(122 to 244 cm). Vehicles must pass
from one loop to the next without
loss of detection.
Dimension “D” = 2.5 ft (76 cm) to help
mitigate tailgating, but may not detect
higher bed vehicles.
Dim D = 6 feet (183 cm) to detect higher
bed vehicles.
Dimension “E” = 10 to 12 feet (305 to
366 cm) if an access control device
is employed.
Dimension “F” = 2 foot minimum
clearance (61 cm).

Effective height of loop (H)
is 2/3 the distance of X.
To detect higher bed vehicles,
keep the short side at 6 ft (183 cm)
which creates a 4 ft (122 cm)
inductance field above ground.
If tailgating is a concern, a
smaller loop is needed, but it
may not detect high bed vehicles.
