CHECKING AND TOPPING UP
ENGINE OIL LEVEL
Carefully read page 56 (ENGINE OIL)
and page 71 (MAINTENANCE).
NOTE Halve maintenance intervals if
you are riding in rainy or dusty conditions,
or on rough road surfaces.
Periodically check engine oil level, change
the oil every 6250 mi (10000 km), see page
76 (CHECKING AND TOPPING UP
ENGINE OIL LEVEL)
WARNING
It is critical to the safe operation of your
vehicle that the proper lubricants,
maintained at the proper levels, are used.
Failure to heed this warning can lead to
an engine seizure with subsequent
accident, serious injury or death.
Check as follows:
NOTE Place the vehicle on firm and flat
ground.
CAUTION
The engine oil level must be checked
with a warm engine and with the oil
level dipstick (1) not tightened.
If you check level when the engine is
cold, oil level may have temporarily
dropped below the "MIN" mark.
This is not a problem, provided that the
alarm light “ ” and the engine oil
pressure icon “ ” do not come on,
see page 31 (INSTRUMENTS AND
INDICATORS TABLE).
NOTE Letting the engine idle with the
vehicle at standstill is not the correct
procedure to warm engine and engine oil
up to operating temperature for an oil
check. Oil is best checked after a trip or
after traveling approximately 10 mi (15 km)
out of town (this is sufficient to bring engine
oil up to operating temperature).
WARNING
Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide,
which is extremely poisonous if inhaled.
Do not start the engine in closed or badly-
ventilated rooms. Failure to observe this
warning may cause loss of
consciousness or even lead to death by
asphyxia.
u Stop the engine, see page 63
(STARTING).
u Keep the vehicle in vertical position, the
two wheels resting on the ground.
WARNING
Should your vehicle overturn, it will leak
gasoline, which is extremely flammable.
Flames or sparks may cause a fire, which
could destroy not only the vehicle, but
also the building in which it is located,
and cause serious injuries or even death.
u Undo the filler plug/oil dipstick (1).
u Clean the oil dipstick (1) and refit, do not
tighten.
u Take it out again and check oil level.
u Correct level is achieved when the oil is
just below the MAX level mark.
CAUTION
Never exceed the "MAX" mark or let oil
level drop below the "MIN" mark, as this
may lead to severe engine damage.
