3-2 Maintaining Your Computer
■ Disconnect your system from power lines when an
electrical storm threatens. Lightning can travel in on
power lines and damage your monitor and the system
unit.
■ Be sure that system power is off before you connect or
disconnect a cable. Never make cable changes when the
system power is on. To do so could damage your system
and its peripherals.
■ Use Setup options to protect against viruses (see
Chapter 2). Use appropriate virus detection software
regularly to protect your system from computer viruses.
If you plan to use software programs other than NEC
supplied software, NEC strongly recommends that you
take the necessary steps, such as virus checks, to protect
your system.
■ Place your computer away from direct sunlight and
extreme hot and cold temperatures.
The recommended operating environment is from 50°F
to 95°F (10°C to 35°C).
The recommended non-operating environment (shipping
or storage) is from 14°F to 158°F (–10°C to 70°C).
■ Back up all hard disk information on a regular basis.
■ After turning off power, wait about five seconds for the
hard disk to spin down before you power on again.
■ Be sure that nothing is placed on top of your system
power cables.
■ Prevent dust from entering your system by covering it
when it is not in use.
