2.4 Removing the Elevator out of Service for some Time
If the elevator has been commissioned, but used as a building elevator, or if it has been
taken out of service for an extended period of time, the following work must be carried
out by a competent person before the installation is put back into normal operation:
– Clean and lubricate the installation
– Replace damaged components
– Check and test the safety components
If the elevator is going to be switched off for periods greater than a month (guideline):
– Disconnect any emergency or back-up batteries
– Check manual evacuation procedure
If the elevator is to be switched off for longer periods, the following actions must be
considered:
– If there is power available: At least once a month the elevator must be moved under
it’s own power for a few minutes throughout the whole hoistway.
– If there is no power, then the car and counterweight should ideally be suspended
and the weight taken off the machine.
