15 Adjusting the Carburetor
15.2 Calibrating the Trimmer / Brushcutter
WARNING
Before accelerating the engine, position the trimmer /
brushcutter in such a way that all parts of your body are clear
of the cutting attachment, @ 5.7.3.
The trimmer / brushcutter adjusts itself automatically for
optimum performance during operation. Calibrating enables
the trimmer / brushcutter to be adjusted faster for optimum
performance.
► If the outside temperature is below 14 °F (- 10 °C) or the
engine is cold:
► Start the engine.
► Warm up the engine by opening and closing the throttle
for about 1 minute.
► Shut off the engine.
► Remove the mowing head or metal cutting attachment.
This allows the trimmer to reliably adjust to the optimum
performance.
► Move the choke lever to position .
► Start the engine without depressing the throttle trigger.
The engine runs and the choke lever remains in position
.
► Run the engine for at least 30 seconds but no more than
60 seconds (A) without depressing the throttle trigger.
► Fully depress the throttle trigger for at least
40 seconds (B) and hold it in that position.
The engine will accelerate and a cutting attachment, if
mounted, will rotate as the trimmer / brushcutter is
calibrated. Engine speed will vary noticeably during
calibration.
► If the engine shuts off, the calibration process was
aborted. Retry the calibration, carefully following these
instructions.
► If the engine keeps shutting off, have the trimmer /
brushcutter inspected by an authorized STIHL servicing
dealer before further use.
► Release the throttle trigger as soon as the engine speed
drops noticeably (C).
The engine will run at idling speed. The trimmer /
brushcutter is successfully calibrated and ready for
operation.
► Shut off the engine.
NOTICE
The trimmer / brushcutter may be incorrectly calibrated if the
throttle trigger is not kept fully depressed during calibration.
This may result in damage to the trimmer / brushcutter.
NOTICE
The calibration process will be aborted if the throttle trigger
is released before the trimmer / brushcutter is properly
calibrated. It is then necessary to restart the entire
calibration process.
15.3 Winter Operation
The carburetor may ice up when the trimmer / brushcutter is
used at ambient temperatures below 50 °F (10 °C). To
prevent icing, the shutter must be converted to allow warm
air from around the engine to heat the carburetor.
► Shut off the engine, @ 12.1.
