Inspection and Repair Required after Accident

After an accident, whether the air bag has been
deployed or not, be sure to perform checks, inspections
and repairs described under “Checking Steering Column
Assembly for Accident Damage” as well as “Repairs and
Inspections Required after an Accident in Section 8B”.
Steering Wheel and Column Diagnosis

For maintenance service of the steering wheel and
column, refer to “Normal Condition Schedule in Section
0B”or “Maintenance Recommended under Severe
Driving Conditions in Section 0B”.
For diagnosis of the steering wheel and column, refer to
“Steering Symptom Diagnosis in Section 6A”.
For diagnosis of the air bag system, refer to “Air Bag
Diagnostic System Check in Section 8B”.
Checking Steering Column Assembly for
Accident Damage

NOTE
• Vehicles involved in accidents resulting in
body damage, where steering column has
been impacted (or air bag deployed) may
have a damaged or misaligned steering
column.
• Steering column is supplied as an
assembly (include steering column and
steering lower shaft). If steering column or
steering lower shaft defective, replace as
an assembly.

10. Steering joint cover : Tightening torque
5. Steering column upper cover 11. Upper and lower joint bolt
: After tightening lower joint bolt, tighten upper
joint bolt.
: Do not reuse.
6. Steering column lower cover 12. Steering column mounting nut
: After tightening lower nut, tighten upper nut.
