3.4 Air filter
A dirty air filter reduces the air flow to the combustion chamber
of the engine and thus reduces engine performance. When
running the engine without an air filter or with a dirty air filter,
dirt gets into the engine which leads to severe wear and damage
to the engine.
Method for cleaning the air filter.
1. Remove the cover above the air filter (1)
2. Manually remove grass and other large debris from the
air filter box.
3. Loosen the nut (2) on the filter top (3) and remove the top
plate.
4. Manually remove grass and other large debris from the
foam filter(4).
5. Carefully remove the foam filter from the paper filter (5).
6. Inspect both filters, and replace them if they are damaged.
7. Clean both filters if you intend to use them again.
It is always necessary to replace the filters
according to the service manual
Clean the paper filter by gently tapping it against a hard object, which will dust off this element, or
clean it from the inner side of the filter with compressed air at a pressure of max 30 psi.
Never try to wipe off the dirt, because this would cause it to get into the fibres of the filter.
Clean the foam filter in warm soapy water, rinse it with clean water and dry it thoroughly.
NEVER dip the filter in engine oil.
Mount the air filter back after cleaning it - proceed in the reverse order of the above mentioned
installation.
