8.10 Comparison of i7xx and SIP phone connections
i7xx phones and SIP phones allow a connection in ‘standalone’ mode or with a PC.
Nevertheless, in view of a different operating mode, the methods of connection to an Ethernet
switch are different.
As a result, an i7xx phone and an SIP phone may be interchanged on the same network socket
only in the following cases:
Phone in standalone mode connected to a port in access mode
Phone in standalone mode with 802.1Q marking on a port in ‘trunk’ mode
i7xx phone SIP phone
Integrated switch Fully transparent for data traffic The switch manages data traffic
marking.
VLAN The i7xx can work in 802.1Q mode
for the phone traffic, since data is
not processed, generally without
802.1Q marking. The phone
accepts marked or unmarked ToIP
traffic.
The SIP phone manages 802.1Q
marking for ToIP and data traffic. Data
taffic marking is retrived by the phone to
the PC.
The phone in 802.1Q mode only
accepts marked frames (ToIP and data).
Qos The i7xx phone can mark its
frames on level 2. The value of the
‘DiffServ’ field is provided by the
iPBX upon phone connection (or
default value in the phone).
Levels 2 and 3 markings can be
configured in the SIP phone.
DHCP The i7xx phone can obtain its
configuration from a DHCP server,
via the ‘Vendor Specific’ option
(43). It can thus be connected to a
data VLAN, to obtain its ToIP
VLAN during the first DHCP
request, and make a second
DHCP request on the ToIP VLAN.
In addition to its IP address, the SIP
phone obtains the address of a
downloading server. By default, it uses
the TFTP to obtain its full configuration
from the server.
The double DHCP request mechanism
of i7xx is not implemented.
