11.2 Practical determination of Emissivity value
Formanyapplications,suchasmetalalloys,itisnotpossibletospecifyaxed
emissivityvalue.Insuchinstances,itispossibletomakeanin-situ,practical
determinationoftherequiredemissivitysettingbycomparisonwithareference
measurementsuchasathermocouplereading.
Theprocedurefordoingthisisasfollows:
1) Sightthethermometerontothetargetsurfaceatthechosenmeasurement
point.Allowthereadingtostabiliseandreleasethetriggertofreezethe
readingsonthesidedisplay.
Note:Donottouchthetriggeragainuntiltheprocedurehasbeen
nished.
2) Usingathermocoupleorreferenceinstrument,measurethetemperature
atthetargetlocation.
3) PresstheSelectkey
to go into the Menumode,presstheDown
arrowkey
toselectthe
e
settingandpresstheSelectkey toselect
thisoption.
4) Thescreenwilldisplaythecurrentemissivityvalueandthelastmeasured
temperaturevalue.
5) UsetheUp
andDown keystochangetheemissivityvalue.The
temperaturereadingwillchangetoindicatethevaluethatwouldhave
beenobtainedatthenewemissivitysetting.
6) Continueadjustingtheemissivityvalueupordownuntilthedisplayed
temperatureagreesascloselyaspossibletothereferencetemperature.
7) PresstheSelectkey
tostorethenewemissivityvalue,presstheUp
arrowkeytoreturntotheExiticonandpresstheSelectkey to
return to Measuremode.
Allsubsequentreadingswillnowusethenewemissivitysetpoint.
